OUR STORY

Humble
beginnings

After taking a college course on the environment, Hunter Strader was inspired to do something about the climate crisis. He wanted to combine his passion for economics and finance with improving the lifespan of the planet. That brought him to the solar industry. After a short stint in the utilities space, Hunter decided to scratch his entrepreneurial itch and form his own solar company. He named it GreenKey—green to align with the industry at large and key as-in “turnkey” to talk about the full service vision he had for taking a piece of land and developing it into a solar farm.

Making
connections

After hearing about opportunities in Oregon, Hunter flew out from his native North Carolina to attend a solar conference. It was there he was connected with Troy Snyder, who would eventually become GreenKey’s co-founder.

Together, they began developing solar projects, initially selling directly to the utility and later evolving into community projects through the Oregon Community Solar Program. After some strategic hires, GreenKey formed a sister company, Renewable Acres, to handle engineering, procurement, and construction.

We believe being a smaller company is an advantage. It gives us the opportunity to get to know landowners 1 on 1 so we can grow relationships along with our projects. Because at the end of the day, trust and integrity are what matter most. That’s why you’ll see us go the extra mile, sometimes extraordinary lengths, to complete a project.

Today, our small but mighty team has become an industry leader in solar development. We’re the largest developer in Oregon, and have developed over 250 megawatts across the country.
